KENTON – The Van Wert Cougars traveled to Kenton to take on the Lady Wildcats. And after the long trip and a rain-shortened game, the Cougars came away with a 5-3 victory in six innings. The Cougars are now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the WBL. The locals came out strong to start the game with four runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Whitney Parrish led off with a single to right-field. Morgan Williams reached by a fielders-choice, and then Brittany Bolenbaugh also hit into a fielders-choice, but this time an errant throw went down the left-field line, scoring both Parrish and Williams. Bolenbaugh scored when Alexa Jent reached first base on error by the Kenton short stop. After a ground out, Carlee Brown hit an RBI single that plated Jent. The Cougars scored their final run for the contest in the fourth inning. Brittany Speelman led off the inning with a base-on-balls. Kara Thomas stepped up and ripped a single, and then Parrish reached by a fielders-choice, as Speelman was forced out at third base. Williams also reached by a fielders-choice moving Thomas to third base. Bolenbaugh then ripped and RBI single to score Thomas, the Cougar center-fielder. The Wildcats scored one run in the bottom of the fourth when Price reached with a single and eventually scored on a groundout. They added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth by virtue of one hit and two very costly Cougar errors. Conkle, who had the only hit in the inning, scored the home teams second run, and then Cozad crossed the plate for their final run. The Cougars were batting in the top of the seventh when the rain poured down flooding the diamond to end the game. Williams took the mound gong the distance and received the victory. She gave up three runs, none of them earned, on three hits. She also walked one and fanned five Kenton hitters. Van Wert will travel to Ft. Recovery on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
