Van Wert 4 Fairview 3

The Van Wert Cougars traveled to Fairview to take on the Apaches and escaped with a 4-3 victory. The Lady Cougars move their record to 7-2 on the season with a 1-1 record in the Western Buckeye League.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and one out, right fielder Madison Kohn made a running basket catch and fired a strike to catcher Carlee Brown. Brown charged the retreating runner, chasing her back towards third base and delivering a strike to third baseman Morgan Williams for the tag and the game-ending double play. "That’s a good way to end a game on the road," said Cougar Coach Jeff Bolenbaugh.

The Cougars scored all four of their runs in the top half of the third inning, starting with Brittany Speelman reaching base after being hit by a pitch. Kara Thomas then followed with a base on balls, and, with one out, Williams hit a slow roller to the Fairview shortstop, who tried to make a play on Thomas at second. Thomas was safe and Bolenbaugh followed with a bases loaded walk. Alexa Jent then hit a 2-RBI single to score Thomas and Williams and move Bolenbaugh to third. Lauren Mosier executed a perfect suicide squeeze for the Cougars’ final run in the inning and the game.

Bolenbaugh went the distance on the mound, giving up three runs, none of which were earned. She walked four Fairview batters and struck out three hitters, while hitting one Apache for a free pass.

Van Wert's Whitney Parrish hit a triple and Brown also had a single. The Cougars’ efforts were aided by three home team errors that seemed to come with great timing for the locals. "The error from their shortstop was big for us and we took advantage of it in that third inning," said Bolenbaugh.

Van Wert's next scheduled game is at home (Jubilee Park) today versus WBL foe Elida. Game time is 5 p.m.
